20th Anniversary, Missionary Sisters of the Holy Cross

On Saturday, August 2, during a special 10:30 a.m. Mass here at OLM, Bishop William Justice will come to OLM to help our very own Missionary Sisters of the Holy Cross celebrate the 20th anniversary of their arrival from Vietnam.

As part of the liturgy, Sr. Marie Faustina Thanh Tu Pham, L.H.C., will also be making her First Profession.

There will be a reception down in the Church Hall right afterwards.

The L.H.C. Convent on Southgate Avenue, near the library, was the first house they established here in California, and it has been going strong ever since. As you may be aware, the Qui Nhon Sisters of the Holy Cross are responsible for keeping our Church so beautiful: they clean and decorate the worship space each week, they purchase and arrange the flowers for the sanctuary, they serve as weekend sacristans, and they take care of the vestments and altar linens. Please join us for this festive occasion next Saturday, and call Barbara at the rectory if you can bring your favorite food dish for the party.

RVM 50th anniversary

During the weekend of July 5, the Religious of the Virgin Mary begin a year of celebration surrounding their 50th anniversary of coming to California to begin their mission work here. As Sacramento was their first mission, the celebrations will be held there, so please keep our R.V.M. Sisters in your prayers during this happy and festive time. (During a meeting this morning, I also learned that our Convent community will be blessed with some new Sisters, about whom you may read in the coming parish bulletins!) As you know, the R.V.M. Sisters are a vital part of our parish, especially in running the Religious Education Program, the Grief Support Ministry, organizing Simbang Gabi each December, and countless other ministries.

On Sunday, July 13, during the 12:00 p.m. Mass here at OLM, Father Hugh O'Donnell and the priest concelebrants will be celebrating his Golden Jubilee, with a potluck reception down in the Church Hall right after the liturgy. By happy coincidence, July 13 is the very date on which Fr. O'Donnell was ordained in Ireland 50 years ago; please do join us for the Mass and/or party if you can!

Eucharistic Adoration Every Friday in Westlake

Our Lady of Mercy Parish, 5 Elmwood Drive, Daly City (near the corner of South Mayfair Avenue), now offers Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday in the Monsignor Richard Power Oratory Chapel, from 9:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.

The adoration concludes with Evening Prayer and Benediction at 8:30 p.m.

On the First Friday of every month, Benediction is at 8:15 p.m., followed by the First Friday Mass at 8:30 p.m.

All are welcome to join us in spending prayer time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.

Several members of the parish and the parish staff approached the pastor about expanding the Eucharistic Exposition, especially as working people did not have the opportunity to participate. Many parish groups (youth group, Charismatic prayer group, Third Order Carmelites, CCD students) have already volunteered to help organize this new prayer experience and invite Catholics to sign up for adoration throughout the day and evening.

Let's Welcome Fr. William Vaughan - our new Parochial Vicar!

Father William L.Vaughan was born and raised in San Francisco, one of six children. He attended Star of the Sea Parochial School, St. Ignatius Prep, and San Francisco State University. He then received a scholarship to study music (organ performance)at Southern Music Methodist University. After graduate school, Fr. Vaughan began to study for the priesthood at the Angelicum in Rome. Following his philosophy studies in Italy, he was accepted at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park, and for some time commuted from San Francisco where he was caring for his ailing parents. Due to Mrs. Vaughan's advancing cancer, Archbishop Quinn decided to ordain Fr. Vaughan a few months earlier than planned, and at his home parish of Star of the Sea, which made it possible for his mother to attend; she died shortly afterwards. Fr. Vaughan's dad died two years ago.

In addition to his work as a parish priest, Fr. Vaughan also serves on the Archbishop's Liturgical Commission, and as a chaplain in the Air Force Reserves; he was promoted to the rank of captain in May. The promotion celebration at Travis Air Force Base included many friends from parishes where he has served, including St. Pius (Redwood City) and St. Raphael (San Rafael) where he has been the associate pastor these last five years.

Through music school, seminary and priesthood, Fr. Vaughan has traveled around Europe and the United States giving organ concerts. He is very excited to be joining OLM, a beautiful, diverse and vibrant parish.
